Students studying natural science and other related subjects can apply for the University of Tokyo Research Internship Programme (UTRIP), which offers summer internship opportunities. Students will get the chance to experience “real graduate-school life” or “research-centered life” through this programme. UTRIP provides access to UTokyo’s academic life and advanced degree programmes. Students can assess their preparedness for demanding graduate work in the natural sciences through this programme. Students who take part will collaborate closely with top scientists at the Graduate School of Science.
The programme includes off-campus activities like a field trip to a historical or natural site in Japan and social and cultural events to promote a better understanding of Japanese culture and foster positive relationships with current UTokyo students, in addition to the opportunity for exceptional scientific research work experience. The programme also includes lectures on scientific fields that cut across disciplines.

UTRIP Summer Internship Benefits for Students
The following advantages are what UTRIP will provide its interns:
- Accommodations: One or two participants will share a privately run off-campus living facility that is specifically tailored for brief visits. Each room will include air conditioning, a desk, and a bed. There is also a refrigerator, laundry machine, shower room, toilet, and kitchenette or kitchen within or outside the room. By rail or foot, the housing facility may be reached from the UTokyo Hongo campus in about thirty minutes. There’s a convenience shop or a grocery store nearby.
- Tokyo offers a wide variety of meals for you to enjoy. You may have meals at the school cafeteria for about 400–700 yen each. A sandwich typically costs 400–600 yen. Dinner costs 1200～1500 yen, and lunch is 800～1000 yen if you dine outside the university. On the University Campus, convenience shops serve light fare and beverages.
- Japanese Language Course: Throughout the programme, a rigorous Japanese language course will be offered. This is an introductory course created especially for members of UTRIP. The goal of this course is to provide students with a foundational understanding of Japanese so they can communicate with Japanese classmates in the lab more effectively and have a smoother time living in Japan. A curriculum that will be immediately beneficial and practical in everyday life circumstances is included in the content. For a very short duration, the training is offered intensely (approximately five courses).
UTRIP Summer Internship 2024-25 Eligibility Criteria
- Required Languages: English
- Eligible Countries: All world countries
- Have, at the time of application, finished at least one full year of a bachelor’s degree programme.
- Be enrolled in and expected to continue in a Bachelor’s degree programme (or the Bachelor’s equivalent year of an integrated Bachelor’s degree programme) at a university outside of Japan for at least one more semester, quarter, or comparable academic term after the UTRIP programme concludes.
- Enrol in a natural science programme or a similar subject.
- Consider pursuing long-term professional objectives in the scientific field.
be able to dedicate oneself fully to the UTRIP programme for the whole six weeks, running from June 26 to September 6, 2024. - Possess proof of health insurance coverage valid for the duration of the internship programme before travelling to Japan.
- English proficiency: If English is not your first language, test results from the TOEFL or a comparable exam (like the IELTS) are needed. Test results that have already expired are acceptable as long as the applicant can still provide the UTRIP office with evidence of the test results upon request.
- Students are excused from submitting their English proficiency exam results if they have attended school exclusively in English for the previous eight years.

Detailed explanations of any previous employment, duties, or projects related to the research topic you want to work on throughout the programme should be included in this. Along with a brief explanation of the courses you have taken or plan to take, a list of recent schools attended (high school, university, etc.) with the year/month of admission and completion for each should be included. If you have any medals or accolades related to the study topic, you should also include them.GPA Applicants must write their official GPA scores, which are provided by their colleges.
You must compute your GPA and explain the process in the “Notes” section if your university does not offer an official GPA score. - English language qualifications
Test results are not required to be submitted by candidates who speak English as their first language OR who have attended school exclusively in English for the last eight years. The test results from the TOEFL or a comparable English proficiency exam (like the IELTS) must be completed by all other candidates, together with a scanned copy of the official test score certificate. Examination results that have previously expired are acceptable, provided the candidate can still provide an original copy of the results upon request from the UTRIP office. - Supporting documents
Scanned copy of academic transcript: Send in a scanned copy of the official transcript(s) from the university.
